A free convection 242 Watt heat sink for electrical circuits is manufactured and simulated using finite difference method. The finite difference program solves the heat transfer equations including conduction and convection. Heat transfer by radiation is embodied in the convection coefficient. Input to program includes densities, thermal conductivities, heat capacities and geometries of heat sink material and surroundings. Results show that the case where the base is vertical and fins are vertical is the orientation that the heat sink has more performance by calculating and measuring the thermal resistances and the steady state final temperatures. Temperature distributions for the heat sink for different positions of the heat source have been implemented in order to investigate the effect of the position location on the performance of the heat sink.
