Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Medicine - Al-Nahrain University, Prof. Dr. (Anis Khalil Nayel), the Pharmaceutical Branch of the College held a workshop entitled (The Post-Antibiotic Era in the Treatment of Infectious Diseases) on 6/8/2021

In which Prof. Dr. Abdel Karim Hameed Abed and Dr. Fouad Kazem Kateh participated.  The workshop included a historical review of the pre-antibiotic era and the great loss of life that humanity suffered during wars, disasters, and major accidents due to the lack of appropriate medicines to treat wound infections and infectious diseases, while the era of antibiotics that began since the forties of the twentieth century was discovered Alexander Fleming - Penicillin, followed by the discoveries of many synthetic antibiotics and antibacterials, which led to controlling the spread of diseases and reducing loss of life, as well as accelerating recovery processes and reducing treatment costs, and after about eighty years, humanity began to enter the era of post-antibiotics due to the exaggerated and wrong use of them, which led to the emergence and development of bacterial resistance to most of the currently available antibiotics.

The workshop concluded with the following recommendations:

1. The need to work on emphasizing the application of legislation that prevents the misuse of antibiotics and to raise awareness of the danger of this among health and medical staff and citizens in general.

2.Preventing the circulation of antibiotics except with a medical prescription.

3. Intensifying research to find new mixtures of antibiotics among themselves and with compounds that protect them from the effect of bacterial resistance.

4. Working on finding new antimicrobials to overcome bacterial resistance.

5. Intensifying research in the field of bacterial phages.

6. Enhancing scientific research in the field of antibacterial medicinal herbs.

7. Developing research and investigation on antimicrobials in the field of medical nanotechnology.
