Ph.D. Dissertation Discussion on the Role of Von Willebrand Factor and Gene Expression of Selected microRNAs in Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction
Publishing date :2025-09-07

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Al-Nahrain College of Medicine discussed the Ph.D. dissertation of student Noor Diaa Nouri entitled:

Determination of Von Willebrand Factor With Gene Expression of MiRs 24 320a 3p 497 5p in Patients with Acute Myocardial Infraction.”

This study aimed to evaluate the role of Von Willebrand Factor (VWF), microRNA-24, microRNA-320a-3p, and microRNA-497-5p in the plasma of patients with acute myocardial infarction compared to apparently healthy individuals as a control group. It also sought to investigate the correlation between the studied biomarkers.

The results showed a significant increase in mean VWF plasma levels in patients (198.74 ± 45.44 ng/ml) compared to the control group (57.01 ± 21.06 ng/ml) with P < 0.001. Moreover, there was a marked decrease in the gene expression levels of microRNA-24, miR-320a-3p, and miR-497-5p in the patient group compared to the control group, with values of 0.148 vs. 1.1, 0.84 vs. 1.1, and 0.6 vs. 1.1, respectively (P < 0.001). The findings indicated a weak negative correlation between VWF and microRNA-24, miR-320a-3p, and miR-497-5p in patients with acute myocardial infarction, as follows:

  • r = -0.537, p < 0.01

  • r = -0.161, p < 0.05

  • r = -0.29, p < 0.05

Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was also conducted for VWF and the studied miRNAs. The results were as follows:

  • Area under the curve (AUC) for VWF: 0.996 (highest, statistically significant).

  • AUC for miR-24: 0.986 (excellent, statistically significant).

  • AUC for miR-320a-3p: 0.649.

  • AUC for miR-497-5p: 0.805.

The discussion committee consisted of:

  • Prof. Dr. Estabraq Abdul Rasool Kweiri (Chair)

  • Prof. Dr. Ammar Latif Hussein (Member)

  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Moayad Basheer Hameed (Member)

  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Duha Salem Neamah (Member)

  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Zina Abdulilah Abdul Ali (Member)

  • Prof. Dr. Omar Farooq Abdul Rasheed (Member and Supervisor)

  • Prof. Dr. Nadhira Salman Mohammed (Member and Supervisor)

The dissertation was accepted with an Excellent grade.
