Pharmacology Department at the College of Medicine, Al-Nahrain University, discussed the Ph.D. dissertation of the student Asmaa Najm Abdul-Jawad, entitled: “Effects of Ecklonia cava and Gymnema Sylvestre combined with Ethinylestradiol / cyproterone acetate on polycystic ovary syndrome in overweight and obese women.” This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effects of oral extracts of Gymnema Sylvestre and Ecklonia cava in the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) among overweight and obese women. The results revealed highly significant differences in body mass index and waist circumference, along with noticeable improvements in PCOS-related symptoms such as hair loss, hirsutism, acne, and menstrual irregularities. Furthermore, improvements were observed in endometrial thickness and ovarian morphology through ultrasound examination, as well as in the regulation of ovulation and fertility-related hormones (LH, FSH, leptin, and testosterone). The treatment also led to an increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL), a reduction in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), a significant decrease in pro-inflammatory markers, and an increase in anti-inflammatory factors compared to the positive control group. The study concluded that the addition of Gymnema Sylvestre and Ecklonia cava to hormonal therapy in obese women with PCOS resulted in a favorable modulatory effect by improving clinical symptoms, correcting metabolic pathways, and restoring hormonal balance.
