Under the patronage of the President of Al-Nahrain University, Prof. Dr. Ali Abdulazeez Al-Shawi, and with the sponsorship and presence of the Dean of the College of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Anees Khalil Nail, the Women’s Affairs Unit at the college organized a scientific seminar entitled: “Combating Drugs and Psychotropic Substances: A Shared Responsibility for Building a Safe and Healthy Society.” The seminar was held as part of the partnership with the Third International Conference on Drugs and Psychotropic Substances held in Libya. The event opened with a speech by the Dean of the College, who emphasized the vital role of academia in raising awareness and confronting the growing threat of drug addiction in order to build a secure and healthy community. Engineer Ziyad Khalaf Kadhim, Head of Media and Public Relations at the General Directorate for Drug Affairs, highlighted in his address the efforts of the Directorate and its staff in combating addiction to protect families and society. Dr. Firas Ali Aziz Al-Kadhimi, Director of Al-Rashad Hospital, delivered a scientific lecture entitled “The Criminal Responsibility of the Addict from a Psychiatric Perspective.” Consultant Dr. Abdulrahim Taha Hammoudi, Director of Al-Qanah Rehabilitation Center, spoke about the center’s role in providing care and rehabilitation for addicts to help reintegrate them into society. Dr. Ibrahim Mahdi Blasim, former Director of the Anti-Drug Program at the Ministry of Health, presented a scientific lecture on “The Biology of Addiction.” Meanwhile, Dr. Sabrin Saad from the Department of Pharmacology at the college gave a lecture titled “Depressants and Stimulants.” The seminar also featured a testimony from a recovered addict, who shared his personal experience of recovery and reintegration into society. The seminar was attended by the college’s associate deans for scientific and administrative affairs, several faculty members, physicians, and undergraduate and postgraduate students. At the end of the event, the Dean of the College of Medicine presented certificates of appreciation to the participants in recognition of their efforts in supporting awareness and combating this serious social problem.
