Heavy menstrual bleeding is a common disorder affecting women in their reproductive years. Hormonal therapies are mostly used for reliving of this disorder in the form of combined oral contraceptive pills containing estrogen and progesterone. Recently, the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system has become one of the widely used alternative therapy. This study aimed to assess the effect of the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (Mirena) on Hb and serum ferritin levels in those women with HMB. A prospective observational study in Al-Imamein Al-Kadhimain Medical City in the period from March to December 2018 included fifty women with HMB. All women have got intrauterine insertion of Mirena within the first week of the menstrual cycle. A blood sample was tacked from each woman immediately before the insertion and again at six months postinsertion. Hemoglobin level and serum ferritin were measured each time according to the standard protocols. On the date of insertion, the mean Hb concentration was 9.3±0.81 gm/dl. After six months of device insertion, the mean Hb concentration raised to 12.1 gm/dl, with a highly significant difference (p< 0.001). Most women (88%) had Hb between 9 to 10 gm/dl at the time of device insertion. No women had Hb> 11gm/dl before insertion. Six months after LNC-IUS insertion, Hb exceeded 11 gm/dl in 58% of those women, while only one woman had Hb less than 9 gm/dl. Likewise, the mean initial concentration of ferritin was 10.1±1.2 ng/mL.
