Scientific seminar about diabetes in children entitled (To support our children to face diabetes).... Media Unit
Under the auspices of the Dean of Al-Nahrain College of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Alaa Ghani Hussein, and with the presence of a number of professors and students with collaboration of Asino Pharmaceutical Company, the Pediatrics Branch held a scientific seminar about diabetes in children entitled (To support our children to face diabetes), on Monday, 23/3/2015.The seminar discussed diabetes and its symptoms, and how to inform people about necessary awareness of diabetes, as well as how to avoid its side effects. The seminar worked to aware families about how to deal with children, especially the diabetic, if they subjected to hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia, and how to make a link between a physician and a patient considering his family to avoid any kind of risks child might be exposed to. All axes were discussed by the professors (lecturers) including:
Prof. Dr. Shatha Hussein Ali Prof. Dr. Salim Rahma Assis. Prof. Dr. AbdulKareem Muhammad Assis. Prof. Dr. Areej Abed AL-Abbas Assis. Prof. Dr. Thiya’a Kathim Khalaf
The seminar dealt with the following axes:
Definition of diabetes and its causes
Symptoms and ways of diagnosis of diabetes
Methods of treatment
Renal (kidneys) future complications
Diabetic ketoacidosis in some of the diabetic
Expected problems in new born of diabetic mothers
Dr. AbdulKareem Muhammad explained the essence of the disease “diabetes” and its causes. Also, he revealed some of the important facts about diabetes especially in children including: the treatment, the importance of response of children and their families, the adaptation with diabetes, and the ways of living with it.
Prof. Dr. Shatha Hussein Ali talked about the important affecting factors in controlling diabetes by diet and its influence in blood sugar levels. She also defined the most important elements of food and how to choose them considering quality of food.
Assis. Prof. Dr. Areej Abed AL-Abbas presented her lecture about how to look after the injured child during his existence at school. She also discussed some important instructions to deal with the disease and the diabetic child.
The audience had been given a chance to participate and make inquiries and talk about what in their minds around this disease. Some asked about new ways of treatment which are always occurred on advertising TV channels, and the news related to the latest discoveries of diabetes treatment. In turn, the participative physicians answered saying that, “no credit is given to drugs but insulin, however, there are many experiments that did not succeed virtually yet.
Lastly, the seminar concluded with the most important recommendations including:
Following-up of diabetic patients at specialized clinic of diabetes at Al-Imamain Al-Kathimain (PBUT) Medical Hospital.
Periodical following-up of the appearance of kidneys complications through periodic urine test to figure out the presence of protein in the urine.
Guiding families through the primary health centers or specialized clinics
Adherence to a special food system for the purpose of controlling the disease and avoid complications in the future.
Coordination with primary health centers and conduct shared seminars.
