Under the auspices of the Dean of the College of Medicine, Dr. Alaa Ghani Hussain, and in collaboration with Acino, a Swiss pharmaceutical company, and in the presence of a number of specialist professors and postgraduate students, the Pharmacology Branch of the college held a scientific symposium on the side effects of drugs on Wednesday the 25th of February 2015.
The symposium covered several topics, beginning with Dr. Haitham Mahmoud Kadhim delivering his lecture on Defining the Side Effects of Drugs. This was followed by a lecture on the same topic by Assistant Professor Ahmed Rahma Abu Ragheef, where he mentioned the side effects of drugs on skin. Assistant Professor Abdul-Karim Hamid Abid explained the side effects of antibiotics, and then MMD Ali Mohsen discussed the role of pharmaceutical companies in minimising the side effects of drugs. The symposium concluded with a question and answer session and a discussion between attendees and lecturers.
All attendees benefitted greatly from the information and guidance provided at the symposium, which included the following:
Highlighting the importance of the side effects of drugs and the need to develop wholesome guidelines to reduce these side effects
Urging those in the medical profession - medical doctors and pharmacists - to keep up to date with the latest research concerning side effects of drugs, and channeling this information through patient contact
Encouraging specialised health institutions to undergo research on individuals and families who experience side effects of drugs
Urging postgraduate students and researchers to conduct research on the side effects of drugs
To conclude, the Pharmacology branch and supervising professors at the symposium would like to thank the Dean of the College for his continuous support of such activities that benefit everyone involved.
