Master’s Thesis Discussion on the Impact of Inflammatory Bowel Disease on the Kidneys Using Novel Biomarkers

29 August 2025

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the College of Medicine, Al-Nahrain University, discussed the master’s thesis of the student Maryam Aqeel Abdul-Jabbar, entitled:

“Study the Role of the [Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinase-2] and [Insulin-like Growth Factor Binding Protein 7] Index and Prostaglandin E2 in Kidney Injury Risk among Inflammatory Bowel Disease Patients.”

Study Aim:

The study aimed to evaluate early renal effects caused by inflammatory bowel disease through the use of routine kidney function tests in addition to novel biomarkers such as:

  • Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinase-2 (TIMP-2)

  • Insulin-like Growth Factor Binding Protein 7 (IGFBP7)

  • Prostaglandin E2

The study also addressed the impact of treatments, particularly biological therapies, on these biomarkers.

The Discussion Committee consisted of:

  • Prof. Dr. Raed Jassim Mohammed (Chairman)

  • Assist. Prof. Dr. Zahraa Sabbar Imran (Member)

  • Lect. Dr. Jalal Abdul Ali (Member)

  • Assist. Prof. Dr. Hend Ahmed Abbas (Member and Supervisor)

  • Assist. Prof. Dr. Ali Sameer Al-Shammaa (Member and Supervisor)
