A scientific symposium on Type 2 Diabetes
Under the patronage of Prof. Alaa Ghani Hussain, our college held a scientific symposium organized by the Department of Internal Medicine / Endocrinology Division, in collaboration with the Swiss pharmaceutical company Acino, on Type 2 Diabetes. The event took place at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 8, 2014. The symposium was chaired by Prof. Hashem Mahdi, Head of the Department of Internal Medicine, and attended by several faculty members and students, who benefited from the focus on the complications of the disease and the latest treatment updates.
The session began with a lecture by Assist. Prof. Mahmoud Shakir Khudair, Head of the Endocrinology and Diabetes Division, who discussed global guidelines for treating this disease. He emphasized the importance of a healthy lifestyle, including diet, exercise, and maintaining an ideal weight, along with the addition of pharmaceutical drugs and regular monitoring.
Dr. Hala Abdul Qadir Al-Muayed, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, then gave a lecture on gestational diabetes, stressing the necessity of treating it due to the complications it can cause for both the mother and the fetus.
Dr. Abdul Kareem Kazem, a specialist in neurology, discussed the impact of diabetes on peripheral nerves. This was followed by a discussion from Assist. Prof. Anees Khalil from the Department of General Surgery on the role of gastric bypass and weight reduction surgeries in treating diabetes and obesity.
A representative from Acino also participated in the symposium, providing an explanation of one of their products, its benefits, and its usage for treatment.
The symposium concluded with an interactive session where the attendees asked questions to further benefit from the topic, ensuring a broad dissemination of scientific knowledge.
