Workshop at Al-Nahrain College of Medicine Discusses the Criminal Responsibility for Cyber Extortion

23 October 2025

Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Medicine – Al-Nahrain University, Prof. Dr. Anis Khalil Nail, the Women’s Affairs Unit, in cooperation with the Legal Division, organized a workshop entitled:

“The Criminal Responsibility for Cyber Extortion.”

The workshop featured Asst. Lecturer Raghdaa Raed Abdulrazzaq, who presented a paper discussing the dangers of the virtual world as a double-edged sword that can either serve society or harm it through the misuse of technology in spreading negative phenomena and committing cybercrimes. She explained that cyber extortion constitutes a clear violation of human freedom and digital privacy, emphasizing that it is not merely a legal issue but also a moral and ethical one that requires setting boundaries for the responsible use of freedom in the digital world. The workshop aimed to raise participants’ awareness about the concept of cyber extortion, mechanisms for reporting it, and methods of protection against becoming a victim. It also included several key recommendations, such as activating two-step verification, avoiding suspicious links, not storing sensitive images on devices, and using strong passwords. Additionally, it stressed the importance of preserving digital evidence and reporting any cyber extortion cases immediately.
