College of Medicine Holds a Training Course Entitled “Secure Laboratories and Biosafety”

Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Medicine – Al-Nahrain University, Prof. Dr. Anis Khalil Nael, and within the activities of the Continuing Education Unit, a training course entitled:

“Secure Labs: Biosafety Best Practices”

was held in the Department of Microbiology during the period October 1–7, 2025, conducted by:

  1. Prof. Dr. Arwa Mujahid Abdullah

  2. Prof. Dr. Haider Sabah Kazem

  3. Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohammed Razzaq Ali

The course was attended by a group of faculty members and postgraduate students. It covered the principles of biosafety and biosecurity, risk assessment, and the importance and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Participants also learned about primary and secondary containment methods, types of biological safety cabinets and their optimal use, as well as safe disposal methods for medical waste, sterilization, and disinfection procedures.
The discussions also included the implementation of biosafety measures in Iraqi universities and hospitals. This training course comes as part of the college’s commitment to enhancing the knowledge of postgraduate students and staff regarding best practices for handling biological materials and agents, thereby reducing potential risks to both individuals and the community.
