Severe hypoglycemia constitutes a major cause of hospitalization in Iraqi hospitals, although not exact figures present.
It represents a burden on the resources available. Defining the major risk factors is vital to minimize the frequency of this problem. The use of different oral tablets especially old sulfonylurea like glibenclamide and human insulin vials is still common even in old adults because of its availability and affordability. Polypharmacy is a problem that may contribute to this problem. In conclusion, this study identifies key factors associated with hypoglycemia in patients with diabetes. Longer disease duration and chronic kidney disease increase susceptibility to hypoglycemia. Moreover, higher usage of glibenclamide suggests its potential contribution to increased hypoglycemia risk.
