About - Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry was established in 1987.
The department has been supervising postgraduate studies since 1993, with the first master's degree awarded in 1995. The department continues to grant higher professional diploma, master's, and doctorate degrees in clinical biochemistry and medical chemistry. The department also teaches various subjects to postgraduate students (master's and doctorate) in other branches of the college. A number of faculty members participate in the Iraqi Board examinations, various evaluation committees, discussions of board and postgraduate student research, evaluation of research for publication in scientific journals inside and outside Iraq, and evaluation of postgraduate theses. The department played a distinguished role by providing various scientific consultations to the clinical chemistry laboratory at the Medical Hospital of the Two Holy Imams, Al-Kadhimayn (peace be upon them) at that time.
The department has distinguished participation with the Continuing Education Unit of the college in organizing various courses and seminars on topics related to raising awareness of the dangers of toxic chemical materials, as well as modern techniques used in clinical diagnosis.
A number of our faculty members have participated in conferences and seminars inside and outside the college.
The department has a patent granted to Professor Dr. Muhammad Imran Hamza in 2021 and to Professor Dr. Istabraq Abdul Rasool Al-Wasiti in 2022.
Our department actively contributes to the Medical Research Center within the college by continuously assigning faculty members.
The department plays an important role in the health center of the college by involving many professors in daily presence at the center.
We also have active contributions through membership in various ministerial committees, such as the Scientific Committee of the Iraqi Association / Emergency Medicine (Ministry of Health), the Iraqi Council for Cancer (Ministry of Health), the Committee for Monitoring the Conduct of Final Examinations (Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research), and many other ministerial committees.
A number of faculty members, as a result of their continuous efforts and fruitful giving, have received several commendations from the minister, university president, and college dean.
Faculty members have an active role and contribution in research work on issues related to the health and environmental reality of Iraqi society.
Many of our professors publish numerous rigorous research in international fields with relatively high impact factors and reputable journals inside and outside Iraq.
Many faculty members have participated in teaching staff development courses through travel outside Iraq to gain additional global expertise, as well as occupational safety courses and emergency medicine courses.
The department has an active contribution to the editorial board of the Iraqi Journal of Medical Sciences through participation in the editorial board, as well as in the Educational Guidance Unit by meeting with students and solving their problems, and in quality and accreditation committees.
