Arab Board Research Discussion on the Clinicopathological Assessment of Secondary Lung Tumors in a Sample of Iraqi Patients
On October 22, 2026, a research study by Dr. Sumaya Hassan Sabri, a third-year Arab Board trainee in Histopathology at the Anatomical Pathology Center of Al-Imamain Al-Kadhimain (AS) Medical City, affiliated with the Local Council of the Arab Board of Health Specializations, was discussed in the Department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine, College of Medicine, Al-Nahrain University.
The research was entitled:
Clinico-pathological assessment of secondary lung tumors in a sample of Iraqi patients
The study investigated 124 cases of secondary lung tumors. Clinical, pathological, and radiological data were collected, along with the results of immunohistochemical (IHC) examinations documented in the pathology reports. The study aimed to characterize these tumors clinicopathologically and identify their primary sites of origin.
The results revealed that breast tumors were the most common primary source, accounting for 25% of cases, followed by soft tissue tumors (13.7%) and gastrointestinal tract tumors (12.9%). Adenocarcinoma was the most prevalent histological type, accounting for 41.9% of cases.
The study also highlighted the importance of integrating clinical, pathological, and radiological findings with immunohistochemical results to achieve an accurate diagnosis and determine the primary site of the tumor.
