Master’s Thesis Defense at Al-Nahrain College of Medicine Investigates Chromium-Induced Oxidative Renal Injury

On Monday, September 7, 2026, a master’s thesis defense was held at the College of Medicine, Al-Nahrain University, Department of Human Anatomy, for the master’s student Sajjad Jubair Kadhim, whose thesis was entitled:

“Oxidative Renal Injury Triggered by Chromium supplementation: KIM-1 as a Biomarker of Tubular Damage.”

The study aimed to investigate the potential nephrotoxicity of chromium supplementation by validating renal injury using Kidney Injury Molecule-1 (KIM-1) as a sensitive early biomarker of proximal tubular damage through immunohistochemical staining. The study also sought to provide safety guidance regarding the use of chromium supplements.

Immunohistochemical analysis revealed minimal KIM-1 protein expression in the control group, moderate expression in the low-dose group, and strong, widespread expression in the high-dose group, predominantly localized within the proximal convoluted tubules. Quantitative analysis confirmed a statistically significant increase in KIM-1 expression among the study groups (p < 0.05), indicating a clear dose-dependent relationship.
