 Medical Students at Al-Nahrain University Lead Peer Education Initiatives to Enhance Academic Skills

As part of the summer activities program organized by the Medical Education and Curriculum Development Unit – Students Chapter (Al-Nahrain Medical Education Activities – Students Chapter), a series of online workshops delivered by students for their peers has been launched, embodying the principle of Peer Education, which is considered one of the modern and effective approaches to promoting collaborative learning and developing leadership and teaching skills among medical students.

The announcement of the first workshops through the Unit’s social media platforms received a notable response from students who registered and participated, reflecting their keenness to make effective use of the summer vacation to develop their academic and personal skills.

The first workshop was held on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at 9:00 p.m., for one hour, with the participation of 12 male and female students from different academic stages at the College of Medicine – Al-Nahrain University, in addition to the participation of a student from the University of Baghdad.

The workshop was entitled:

“Feedback: How Do We Give It and How Do We Benefit from It?”

The workshop addressed the following topics:

• Defining the concept of feedback and highlighting its importance in medical, academic, professional, and personal contexts.

• Identifying different types of feedback and effective ways of delivering it.

• Self-reflection: How to receive feedback and make use of it to improve performance through self-reflection.

The workshop was presented by Maryam Muthanna Shihab (Class of 36) and Rand Ammar Riyadh (Class of 37), in an experience that reflects the leading role of the College’s students in sharing knowledge and exchanging experiences with one another.

This initiative is part of a series of training workshops that will be delivered successively throughout the summer vacation, as part of the vision of the Medical Education and Curriculum Development Unit to foster a culture of peer education and empower students to take on the roles of both learners and learning facilitators. This contributes to preparing future medical professionals equipped with skills in communication, teamwork, and lifelong learning.
