Successful Surgical Team Led by Prof. Dr. Bashar Abbas Performs Pancreatic Head Tumor Resection
A surgical team led by Prof. Dr. Bashar Abbas, Head of the Department of Surgery at the College of Medicine, Al-Nahrain University, and a subspecialist in hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal surgery, successfully performed a complex operation to remove a tumor from the head of the pancreas.
The team included Dr. Ali Radi, Consultant Anesthesiologist; Dr. Noor Ali Jassim, Senior Resident in General Surgery; Dr. Mustafa Khudhair, Senior Resident in General Surgery; and Roaa Abdul-Kadhim, Surgical Assistant.
The patient, a 40-year-old woman from Maysan Governorate, had been suffering from obstructive jaundice. Preoperative investigations confirmed that the tumor could be completely resected, as it was not adherent to major vital blood vessels. This allowed the surgical team to proceed with a Whipple procedure, which involved resection of the pancreatic head, duodenum, gallbladder, part of the common bile duct, and a portion of the stomach, followed by reconstruction to ensure continuity of digestive function.
The operation lasted four and a half hours. The patient showed significant improvement and was discharged on the fourth postoperative day, reflecting the success of the surgical intervention and the medical team’s high level of expertise in managing complex cases.
