Scientific Seminar at the College of Medicine, Al-Nahrain University on UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security
Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Medicine, Anis Khalil Nayel, the Women’s Affairs Unit at the College organized a scientific seminar entitled United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security.
The seminar addressed United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, adopted on 31 October 2000, as the first landmark resolution linking women’s issues with peace and security. It emphasizes the protection of women from violence during and after conflicts, as well as their pivotal role in peacebuilding.
The seminar also reviewed the National Action Plan for the implementation of the resolution in the Republic of Iraq. The Iraqi government adopted this plan in April 2014, making Iraq the first country in the Middle East and North Africa region to adopt such a national framework, with support from the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq.
In addition, the seminar included a presentation on the structure of the multi-sectoral working group, along with a model of the implementation matrix aimed at advancing the status of women, promoting gender equality, and ensuring their active participation in peace processes and decision-making during conflicts.
The seminar targeted students of the College of Medicine, emphasizing their future role as physicians in providing protection and care for women affected by violence, and in supporting the implementation of Resolution 1325 and its national action plan.
The session was moderated by Assistant Professor Haifa Radi Jaafar, Head of the Women’s Affairs Unit, while the topics were presented by Assistant Lecturer Zahraa Abdul Amir Al-Harbi, in the presence of a number of faculty members and students.
