The Department of Pharmacology is organizing a scientific seminar in celebration of the Global Week for Antimicrobial Awareness.

Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Medicine at Al-Nahrain University, Professor Dr. Anis Khalil Nayel, the Department of Pharmacology held an awareness seminar titled "Strategies to Prevent Antimicrobial Resistance" in celebration of the Global Week for Antimicrobial Awareness. The seminar took place in the department's hall and featured presentations by:
- Assistant Professor Dr. Farah Rasool Jaafar, College of Medicine, Al-Nahrain University
- Assistant Lecturer Sabreen Saad, College of Medicine, Al-Nahrain University
The seminar included an introduction to antimicrobial resistance, its classification based on its action, mechanisms of bacterial resistance, and reasons for increasing bacterial resistance.
The aim of the seminar was to emphasize strategies to prevent antimicrobial resistance and increase awareness and understanding of antimicrobial resistance through the following recommendations:

- Enhancing surveillance and research
- Reducing infection rates
- Using antimicrobial drugs optimally
- Ensuring sustained investment in combating antimicrobial resistance
- Using antibiotics only after consulting a doctor and confirming their necessity and effectiveness in treating the illness
- Avoiding discontinuation of antibiotics as soon as symptoms improve and ensuring the proper dosage and timing as per doctor's instructions
- Proper handwashing before and after meals and regularly when entering a hospital
- Covering the nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing
- Using paper tissues to clean the nose and disposing of them properly
- Avoiding products claiming to contain antibiotics or antibacterial agents unless advised by a doctor
- Not taking advice from friends or relatives about using antibiotics; instead, performing swabs to identify the pathogenic microbe for correct antibiotic use
- Stopping farmers from administering antibiotics to livestock used in treating human infections
- Avoiding purchasing antibiotics for potential future use
- Ensuring receipt of all necessary vaccinations for disease prevention.
