On Wednesday, 2024/7/24, the discussion of the Higher Diploma (equivalent to Master’s) thesis by student Mayson Mahmoud Hussein was completed. The panel included Prof. Dr. Istabraq Abdulrasool Al-Wasiti as a member and supervisor, and Prof. Dr. Raid Jassim Mohammed. The discussion took place in the main hall of the Higher Institute for Infertility Diagnosis and Assisted Reproductive Technologies. The thesis title was:
**The Role of Seminal Plasma Chitotriosidase-1 and L-carnitine Markers in the Follow-up of Infertile Men With and Without Varicocele**
**Objective of the Study:** To evaluate the inflammatory effect of varicocele on semen parameters that impair male reproductive capacity by investigating the levels of biomarkers (Chitotriosidase-1 and L-carnitine) that may predict fertility potential in the male reproductive system.
**Conclusions:** The study clearly demonstrated that varicocele’s impact on the testicular microenvironment might induce an inflammatory process, leading to the release of certain inflammatory markers such as Chitotriosidase-1. It also showed a decrease in seminal plasma L-carnitine levels in infertile men with varicocele compared to those without varicocele.
**Final Conclusion:** Male infertility is a significant cause of infertility cases, and one of its important causes is varicocele, which is treatable. The markers Chitotriosidase-1 and L-carnitine investigated in this study showed elevated levels of Chitotriosidase-1, a silent inflammatory marker expressed on macrophages and to a lesser extent on neutrophils, in infertile men with varicocele more than in those with other causes of infertility. L-carnitine, considered a biomarker of epididymal function, was found in lower concentrations in infertile patients, including those with varicocele.
**Discussion Committee Members:** - Prof. Dr. Alaa Mohammed Al-Kawaz (Chairman) - Prof. Dr. Abbas Sabbar Dakel (Member) - Assist. Prof. Dr. Raid Jassim Mohammed (Member) - Assist. Prof. Dr. Haider Ali Lefta (Member and Supervisor) - Prof. Dr. Istabraq Abdulrasool Al-Wasiti (Member and Supervisor)
Best wishes to the professors, and congratulations to the student.
