On Thursday, 2024/7/25, at 9:00 AM, the PhD dissertation defense of student Amir Fadhil Jawad Al-Tuma was held in the discussion hall of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry/Medical Biochemistry for his dissertation titled:

**Assessment of Serum Level of Gasdermin D and Gene Polymorphism in Relation to Interleukin 18 and Some Other Biomedical Parameters in Diabetic Nephropathy in a Sample of Iraqi Patients**

**Objective of the Study:**

The aim of our study is to assess the serum level of Gasdermin D and gene polymorphism to determine their relationship with Interleukin 18 and some other biomedical parameters in diabetic nephropathy in a sample of Iraqi patients.

**Results:**

The comparison of parameters (total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein, very low-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, random blood sugar, glycated hemoglobin, blood urea, creatinine, glomerular filtration rate, Gasdermin D, and Interleukin 18) was divided into three comparative groups. The first group compared diabetic nephropathy patients to diabetic patients without nephropathy, showing significant results (P-value ≤ 0.01) in the parameters (blood urea, creatinine, glomerular filtration rate, Gasdermin D, and Interleukin 18), while other parameters showed non-significant results. The second and third comparative groups compared diabetic nephropathy patients and diabetic patients without nephropathy to healthy control individuals, showing significant results in all parameters. Gasdermin D gene polymorphisms (rs7840446 and rs138605740) were significantly associated with diabetic nephropathy and diabetic patients without nephropathy, but not significantly associated with (rs59118283).
