Publishing date :2024-09-03

The Master’s thesis defense of the student *Mohammed Jasim Mohammed* took place on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at 9:00 AM in the discussion hall of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry/Medical Biochemistry. His thesis is titled:

**"The Serum Oxidative Stress Biomarkers and Selenium Levels in Patients with Overt and Subclinical Hypothyroidism Compared with Healthy Controls."**

### Study Objectives:

1. To understand the relationship between selenium levels and thyroid hormone metabolism in various cases of hypothyroidism.

2. To investigate the potential impact of excessive oxidative stress on thyroid function and the progression of hypothyroidism.

3. To determine the serum concentrations of selenium, MDA, and TAC indicators.

### Results:

The current study results indicate that patients with overt hypothyroidism have higher concentrations of MDA and TAC, while selenium levels in overt hypothyroidism are significantly lower compared to both the subclinical hypothyroidism group and the control group. The analysis revealed significant differences between all groups, with a good sensitivity and specificity cutoff value, suggesting these markers can be used for early diagnosis and screening of hypothyroidism.
