Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Medicine at Al-Nahrain University, Professor Dr. Anis Khalil Nail, in collaboration with the Continuing Education Unit, the Department of Microbiology conducted a workshop titled: **"Extraction of Bacterial Genomes and Plasmids Using the Miniprep Plasmid DNA Extraction Kit"** The workshop was held in person at the library hall and practically in the laboratories of the Department of Microbiology over two days by the following faculty members: - Professor Dr. Thana Rashid Abdulrahman - Assistant Professor Dr. Huda Dhaher Hithal - Assistant Professor Dr. Qudus Wameed Jamal The aim of the workshop was to explain the difference between genomic DNA extraction and plasmid extraction, and to demonstrate the method for extracting plasmids from both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, as well as isolating and purifying them using a silica column to obtain plasmids free of protein impurities and other contaminants, making them suitable for use in molecular diagnostic tests. On the first day, participants were introduced to plasmids, their components, and types. They also learned about the methods for isolating and purifying different plasmids, and the distinction between full bacterial genome extraction and plasmid extraction. Additionally, the workshop covered the components of the kit used and the purpose of all the materials and steps involved in the kit. On the second day, the practical application of bacterial plasmid extraction and purification was carried out in the lab using the kit, with detailed explanations provided for each step and the significance of every material used in the extraction process.
