A specialized procedure for the removal of the right colon using laparoscopic surgery through small incisions, avoiding traditional surgery and large incisions.

A specialized surgical team from the Surgery Department of the College of Medicine at Al-Nahrain University, in collaboration with Al-Imamain Al-Kadhimain Teaching Hospital, led by Professor Dr. Bashar Abbas, a specialist in gastrointestinal surgery, performed a major surgery on a 73-year-old patient.

The head of the surgical team mentioned that the patient had been suffering from a lymphatic tumor in the neck for the past seven months. During the PET scan conducted by Professor Dr. Waseem Fadel Al-Tamimi, a specialist in hematology, another tumor was discovered in the right colon. After a colonoscopy, the tumor was confirmed. Following discussions by the hematology and gastrointestinal surgery teams, it was decided to proceed with treating the lymphatic tumor using chemotherapy. Once the treatment was completed and the patient was cured of the lymphatic tumor, the patient was referred to the surgical team.

After completing the necessary preparations, the patient was admitted to the hospital, and a right colectomy was performed, fully removing the tumor. The small intestine was then connected to the remaining part of the colon using laparoscopic surgery through small incisions and internal stapling techniques. The patient is in good health, and thankfully, he was discharged after just one day of hospitalization.

The surgical team consisted of:

  • Professor Dr. Bashar Abbas, Specialist in Gastrointestinal Surgery

  • Dr. Ali Radi, Anesthesiologist

  • Dr. Baha Al-Din, General Surgery Resident

  • Dr. Ali Taha, Surgery Resident

  • Dr. Osama Mohammed, General Surgery Resident

  • Rawaa, Skilled Surgical Assistant

At Al-Imamain Al-Kadhimain Medical City Hospital, a surgery was performed today by Professor Dr. Abdul Amir Jasim, involving a cervical laminectomy on a young patient suffering from spinal cord stenosis at the C5 and C6 vertebrae. The procedure relieved pressure on the nerves and spinal cord, and the patient's pain disappeared remarkably right after the operation. The surgical team included several colleagues, anesthesia specialists, and neurosurgery board students from both the Iraqi and Arab programs.
